With more than 20 years under its belt and the scale to match, chances are, you’ve heard about Bonnaroo. From attendee outfits chock full of winged costumes and harnesses to over 10 stages of marquee musical acts, to elopements and parties thrown by the same club behind “Ketamine: The Musical,” Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is all that and more.
With 700 acres of farmland at Tennessee’s Great Stage Park, there’s room for all kinds of wild activities alongside the 110 artists, headlined by Pretty Lights, Post Malone, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fred Again… Bonnaroo is split into two large sections: Centeroo, where the main stages are, and Outeroo, the surrounding campgrounds that are divided into plazas. Each plaza brings a different flavor and scope of activities. Of these, House of Yes — a Brooklyn-based nightclub responsible for the aforementioned musical — has been a regular partner since 2018. Despite efforts by members of the Tennessee state legislature to pass laws that discriminate against LGBTQ+ folks, House of Yes will have you dreaming of psychedelic rainbows with drag performances and a pride parade. Not feeling enough love yet? There’s also the House of Matroomony located in Centeroo where you can have a fully legal chapel-style wedding amongst cheering strangers and passionate officiants.
You’re going to hear radio hits every evening, but, during the day, keep an eye out for international acts like Montreal-based indie rock group Half Moon Run and Sid Sriram. Born in India, Sriram combines the South Indian classical music — known as Carnatic music — of his birthplace with the R&B and indie-rock sounds of his upbringing in the U.S. in a musical and linguistic mashup. You’ll also find all the daytime vendor markets, yoga sessions and sustainability-related activities that are relatively commonplace at festivals these days, as well as a water slide, a 5K race and a ferris wheel. And when it comes time to ride off into the sunset (or to the next artist set) with your new spouse, hop on the JamTrak, a tram running through the campground that stops by all the plazas.
