Another trip around the sun means paying homage to Mother Earth in the only way central Florida knows how: with hard rock, day drinking and Harley-Davidson merch. Hosted by WJRR and sponsored by Hard Rock Orlando, the Sunshine State first threw this outdoor party in 1993.
Don’t let the name fool you — though the festival is scheduled the Saturday nearest to actual Earth Day, Earthday Birthday isn’t particularly centered around environmental protection. The real meat and potatoes is the event’s Seattle post-grunge sound. Explosive headliners like Seether, Staind and Asking Alexandria will take the stage this year. Don your jean shorts and stroll the fairgrounds for a sound bath of grungy basslines, tight snares and crashing cymbals. When your ears start ringing, take a well-earned break at the BMX demonstration or the Art & Charity Walk, an outdoor art show full of pieces for purchase from the artists of central Florida. In past years, you could catch a glimpse of tag-team wrestling or try your hand at ax throwing between sets, too.
Earthday Birthday has tightened up some loose screws from previous years that left attendees feeling frustrated. Vendors could only accept “Earthday Birthday Bucks” as currency inside the Fairgrounds, forcing concertgoers to queue up and exchange their cash before being able to buy anything. For 2024, WJRR has ditched that system, and now accepts credit and debit at the vendor village, bars and food trucks, allowing for easier purchases from local artisans and restaurant vendors.
