Innings Festival Tempe 2024

FEBRUARY 23, 2024 - MARCH 02, 2024
TEMPE, AZ

THE SHORT VERSION

Two of America’s favorite pastimes team up for two days outside of Phoenix.

Ah, baseball. Our national sport. The green field, the lack of a game clock and the theoretical endlessness. All of it points to a simpler time, before digital watches and concrete hedged in and dominated our lives. What better way to celebrate that national pastime than in an asphalt concert venue in the middle of the desert?

Extra Innings Festival’s riverside locale in Arizona may not immediately scream baseball, but the event’s attachment to the sport can’t be questioned.  (The Diamondbacks did make it all the way to the World Series this year.) The two-day festival merges the nation’s athletic aesthetic with one of America’s other major cultural past times: rock music. It’s an obvious match — both types of fans love cheering for stars from stadium seats.

While its sister festival in Florida won’t be continuing, Tempe, Ariz.’s Innings Festival is looking to return to its roots after last year’s foray into punk music. While acts like Green Day can win over a crowd in almost any environment, concert goers noted an overall clash in vibe. Not so this year. The festival is spread over two separately-ticketed weekends, with each lineup catering to a different subset of music fans. Headliners include mainstream staples like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chris Stapleton, the Dave Matthews Band and Greta Van Fleet, as well as one very un-American act, the Irish acoustic songwriter Hozier. A variety of food trucks will showcase southwest culinary specialties — and of course, hot dogs.

What makes Innings Festival unique is its baseball components. Batting cages will be available for baseball fans to knock the rust off their swings, and the festival will have appearances by Major League Baseball legends like Matt Kemp, Luis Gonzalez, and Brandon Webb as part of Ryan Dempster’s Off the Mound interview series. Unlike MLB, there will be no chance for extra innings, so be sure to take yourself out to the ball game while you still can.
