THIS FESTIVAL HAS BEEN CANCELLED “DUE TO SEVERE CIRCUMSTANCES OUTSIDE OF PRODUCTION CONTROL.” ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.
Made in America was always a sure thing. The festival started out eleven years ago as the brainchild of Jay-Z, the rapper turned hip-hop mogul turned venture capitalist, who has long played the role of kingmaker in the music scene. Made in America reinforces that role by temporarily transforming the Benjamin Franklin Parkway into a musical sandbox, five stages deep, each artist personally selected by Hova himself. In 2012, that meant an eclectic mix of rock and hip-hop exemplified by a now-legendary Jay-Z/Pearl Jam remix of “99 Problems.” The last few years, however, have seen the lineup swerving more and more definitively toward hip-hop, R&B and Latin grooves. Bad Bunny and Tyler, the Creator were last year’s most-hyped acts, and SZA and Lizzo have the fest’s top spots in 2023.
As far as food goes, you already know there’s going to be cheesesteaks, loaded fries and pretzel twists. But did you know Jay-Z also has his own line of cognac called D’ussé, which has an exclusive contract with Made in America? It’s pronounced “d’you say,” as in “d’you say that drink costs fifteen bucks?” Alas, the hustle never sleeps–or, to quote the man himself: “I’m not a businessman/ I’m a business, man.”
