Welcome to Rockville, population 170,000 — and they’re ALL headbanging. You’ll hear that it’s biggest rock festival in Florida and possibly the biggest rock festival in North America. For certain is this: It’s held at the Dayton International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., (site of the Daytona 500) this festival gathers over 150 of the biggest names in rock — which this year will include Foo Fighters, Motley Crue, Slipknot, The Struts, Greta Van Fleet and The Offspring — as well as newer acts who have joined the scene in the past few years like Citizen Soldier and Rain City Drive.
If you are part of the niche that likes headbanging outside near a beach, you may as well do it here, in Florida in May, before the risk of heatstroke gets too high. This year, this four-day, beachside-ish festival is adding a fifth stage. Will that mean less shoving at each stage? If so, then we would call that southern hospitality, although we can not guarantee you won’t end up in a circle pit by accident anyway, where you are even more likely to get heatstroke.
In addition to music, which there will be so much of it may be hard to get away from, the festival has attractions you’d expect to see at an adapted speedway: amusement rides, art installations, food and spirits and inflatable water slides. Nothing says rock n’ roll like throwing yourself down a gigantic water slide while A Day to Remember power screams into a microphone behind you.
Camping is an option for those so inclined, and a communal part of the festival. Welcome to Rockville’s camping passes include a five-night pass to Daytona International Speedway’s Orange Tent Campground — including an exclusive pre-festival party on Wednesday, May 8 — and free access to facilities and showers.
